Last summer before I got injured I began to paint again. In our little crowded studio that is shared between business office, Annie’s drawing table, my painting, reference library, and a frame shop—plus storage and a fridge all in a 10’x12’ building. It is part of the tiny-house compound we live in that has an extremely small footprint.
I had already created some Florida landscapes but was looking for something to add drama to the compositions. Then the inspiration came straight from the news. Nearly every year inland Florida goes through a fire-season. Unless it rains regularly the vast underbrush becomes dry and tangled. After an extended period of time the dry brush builds up and with lightning strikes or other sources it can catch fire and burn large areas.
Often natural causes but arson is an unfortunate cause of fire, however, it can also be a controlled burn to rid the landscape of too much undergrowth. The environment is actually tuned in for occasional fires because some of the flora relies on fire to seed and nurture new growth.* So as destructive as fire seems it is also part of the cycle of nature that… “creates what it destroys and then destroys what it creates”.
