These are very uplifting and gentle characters who are sometimes seen with Saint Nicholas who is more often the gift giver in Eastern Europe. I think Father Christmas arose in this milieu along with the exquisitely drawn historic spirits of the Celtic world as opposed to the Corporate Santas we are smothered with.
